What we do

How We Support Journalism

Since 1887, the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA) has served as a vital force in supporting independent journalism and community newspapers throughout the state. We advocate for transparency, empower local newsrooms with resources and training, and provide platforms that keep the public informed. Our work spans across press outreach, government policy, public notices, and industry support—each critical to preserving the role of the free press in civic life.

Local News Earns Your Trust

Just as each community is different, so is their newspaper. Each reflects their own connection to their region's culture and spirit. And each is so important to their community's civic health.

Local journalism curtails government corruption and results in lower government spending, and has even been shown to incentivize the private sector to adhere to laws and regulations. As well, it provides researched and verified information, allowing for conversations based on a commonly held understanding of facts. Communities are based on shared values, shared understandings of their circumstances and an ability to have a healthy debate.

While trust in media is at a new low of 28%, according to a recent Gallup poll, newspapers continue to be granted among the highest trust of news outlets. Nationally, newspapers receive 49% of people's trust. According to Pew research, though, at least 70% of people are trusting of their locally produced news.

That's because their readers personally know their reporters and editors. They're part of the community. And their community is served with information they need by their local newspaper.

The WNPA is committed to helping our local, community newspapers generate new sources of revenue to remain competitive in an age where their work is needed now more than ever.

Training

The WNPA offers invaluable training and guidance to support newspapers across the state. Through free webinars and an extensive on-demand archive, as well as live workshops, members gain access to a wide range of industry expertise—from public records law to newsroom management and community engagement. While WNPA does not provide direct legal services, it connects member newspapers with trusted legal resources and experts who can assist with specific needs. The association is also developing a growing archive of knowledge-based materials to help publishers navigate evolving legal and professional challenges with confidence.

Advocacy

WNPA works with Allied Newspapers of Washington, the Washington Coalition for Open Government and others to advocate for sensible legislation and regulation that ensures the viability of community newspapers. Issues surrounding transparency in government, the retention of requirements to publish legal notices in community newspapers, and the scraping of our online content by Big Tech without compensation all create threats to the functioning of the Free Press.

By centralizing these advertisements—from construction projects and government bids to bankruptcies and estate filings—the portal supports transparency and equal opportunity for businesses, citizens, and communities alike. Subscribers can easily stay informed by setting up notifications, allowing them to track new postings in real time and engage with opportunities that drive community development and business growth.
