Be Part of History: America's 250th Anniversary

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence — America's Semiquincentennial. Organizations across Washington State are developing plans for how their communities can be part of this historic moment, and your publication is invited to join them.

WNPA has been working with Lorraine Ralston, the America250 WA Coordinator at the Washington State Historical Society, on how Washington's newspapers can participate. The celebration is focused on local communities, local histories, and local voices — a natural fit for the work our members do every day. More than 800 organizations around the state have already signed up as community partners, and events and activities are being planned in nearly every community.

WNPA members can become official media partners of America250 WA at no charge. There is no fee — just a commitment to help raise awareness of America250 events and activities in your area. As an official media partner, you will be recognized on the state website and receive regular updates about what is happening around the state and nationally.

Key Dates in 2026:

  • June 14 — Day of Service: Communities are encouraged to organize local service projects as part of the largest public service initiative in American history.

  • July 4 — Independence Day: Communities are encouraged to celebrate with special engagement activities.

  • Aug. 8 — Washington Museum Day: Museums around the state will be open with free or discounted admission.

  • Sept. 17 — Day of Civic Engagement: Communities are invited to plan activities to inspire civic participation.

To become an official media partner, contact Lorraine Ralston, America250 WA Coordinator, at [email protected]. For more information, visit america250WA.org. To sign up as a partner, go to america250WA.org/partners.
